Elgato EyeTV HD: A review of the Mac DVRS for cable and satellite HDTV (TUAW.com)

Filed under: Accessories, video, Macby Steven Sande (RSS feeds) on December 18th at 7: 30PMShare 2010

Elgato has been on the Mac video market for some time, development and commercialization of popular products such as video compression device Turbo.264 HD USB and various varieties of EyeTV tuner and digital video recorder for Mac.

Eariler this year TUAW examined the EyeTV Hybrid, a dongle USB of US$ 149.95 which serves as a tuner and recorder for over-the-air digital television. Since that time, Elgato released HD EyeTV ($ 199.95 and available at least to points of sale online), which the company touts as "the ultimate TV cable and satellite HD DVRS.

The two devices work with Elgato EyeTV for Mac software includes a smart guides for a season of any program for your Mac or an external disk automatically, saving guide program, easy export video to iTunes for syncing iDevices and even streaming application to iOS EyeTV. The big difference? EyeTV HD works with cable or satellite HD boxes that many people use for pump that digital signal quality to their HDTV. Click the read more link below for a full review of this video material unique.

Setup

Looking at the back of the EyeTV HD packaging Setup seems very simple - you just need to run audio and video cables between the satellite or cable and HD EyeTV, execute your Mac's USB cable and then connect a cable infrared channel changer for HD EyeTV "take control" of your cable box. Elgato is smart enough to include all necessary cables in the box, you do not have to run to the local Radio Shack to buy to put in place the HD EyeTV. There is also a remote control and a CD on which you can find a copy of the EyeTV software (I he downloaded from Elgato site to obtain the latest version).

The Setup program is incredibly easy that even I could do! After cables to be connected according to the quick start guide, I launched the EyeTV application on my MacBook air. There I quickly guided by a connection to HD EyeTV, gathering the required channel guide (and I think that I had a bad...), and then selecting the appropriate box cable. The latter was carried out by clicking a button on the Mac screen to see if it is found the cable box or disable.

Operation

One thing to remember is that EyeTV HD is not a replacement for your gamepad cable decoder or satellite. You will use for video display on your Mac as well as for the video capture to your Mac or an external hard disk is attached. That being said, the EyeTV HD is a high-performance work.

Video reviewed big screen MacBook Air, so I can only imagine how awesome it would be an iMac display 27 "or something." Inflow can be set to fill your screen or scaled to provide a window watching TV on your Mac, and the sound quality is good. EyeTV captures and plays its Dolby Digital. Using optical digital audio output on the latest Mac, it may transmit its Dolby Digital 5.1 home cinema for incredible systems

As you can see in the video below, the user interface is as a channel that you would get in a standard cable box guide. The guide provides a list of hour performances on a specific channel, and you can also search for shows by name. Once the complete guide has been fulfilled on the Mac, scroll through the list was lightning fast. You get free access Guide Channel (provided by TV Guide) for one year; After that, the guide costs $ 19.95 per year.

Choose a particular show guide, you can choose to save the issuance, registration on a calendar, or save all episodes of a program. Registration is not all HD EyeTV can do, of course. Watch a show, you can perform all functions DVR typical suspension and rewind the live video. If you use a widescreen Mac as your television, you can even use the included remote control to perform all these actions and navigate through the user interface for HD EyeTV. The software can even be set to wake up or turn on your Mac at a specific time to record a show.

It is fairly easy editing of recorded broadcasts. Integrated editor can be used to remove commercials from records or to merge the episodes broadcast.

You want to watch your shows recorded on something other than a Mac? Your video can be automatically saved on iPad iTunes and iPhone format at the same time. There is a way you can video stream live or recorded to an iPhone or iPad application of EyeTV $4.99.

If there are several Mac in your household, then Mac can install the OS X EyeTV application and share records on a Wi - Fi or Ethernet network. That parental controls are enabled in EyeTV software, you can have a large library of performances with mature themes and make sure that your children can watch.

Negative

One thing I found odd about the software was that when I tried to move a channel, he could show me the correct channel name or description, but often I found myself watching the channel lower or higher than that I really wanted to. This is due to a defect in operation of the installation on my part - either in infrared blaster or may choose the incorrect channel - guide or is a software error, it is quite boring. I have no opportunity of trying to make the installation once more, but I am confident that this would solve the problem.

Conclusion

Elgato EyeTV HD is great for those who have cable or satellite HD TV services and who would like to watch and record shows on their Mac. The EyeTV software adds functionality whenever examines Elgato is new trends of visualization rendering the EyeTV HD device and software works well with other Mac, iPhone and iPads.

A short video follows this post — it has been registered for the episode 15 December 2010 TUAW TV live, and it shows the EyeTV HD in action. TUAW later give the Elgato EyeTV HD among many gifts for Macworld Expo 2011 in San Francisco from 27 to 29 January. If you go to this year's event, don't forget to visit us in booth 1012 a chance to win this and other valuable prizes.

How VMware differs from Amazon Web Services in its approach to import virtual machines (feedburner)

This post is part of our ReadWriteCloud, channel dedicated to covering the cloud and virtualization computing. The canal is sponsored by Intel and VMware. Read the case study on how the city of Santiago, the Spain turned to virtualization.

vizcloudkick.pngAmazon Web Services (AWS) import VMware image is somewhat like the Hotel California. You can check but you can never leave.

This is the point of view of VMware on AWS import virtual machines VMware. Without any real export functions, AWS is locking in customers who want to extend its infrastructure virtualized environment public cloud.

Matthew Lodge is Director, principal of VMware cloud services. We took with him this week to talk about VMware approach and how it differs from AWS.

Referred to in Tom Bittman, an analyst at Gartner Research, who says Lodge as safety and performance are two of the top concerns on the outskirts of the cloud infrastructures.

In short, is a distinct manner that VMware differs from AWS.

Hybrid is that VMware sees his next thrust. Making the move to import virtual machines VMware AWS is grateful a significant market opportunity. It also demonstrates VMware dominant position on the market.

But George Reese for a saw some problems with the AWS methods both VMware. Reese is the founder of EnStratus, a service that helps businesses to expand its data centers in the cloud clouds management. He says that AWS import method is too low. He told us via Twitter would be like a running application on its own separate mother. This motherboard will then be carried from one server to another.

The best solution is to be portable to the application layer and run your application on any virtual machine on your target operating system.

Lodge says VMware offers its customers security and control movement of the cloud.

In a blog in August, he wrote:

"Another area important that heard talk us time and was once again security." Consequently, security is a key element of vCloud Datacenter services. There are three parts to this: the security of cloud infrastructure itself, applications running in the cloud and authentication for users of clouds within your organization and access rights.

You told us that it was not enough that the infrastructure and applications are protected; security teams and Auditors should be able to verify and document too. To provide this service for Datacenter vCloud infrastructure a meet a strict set of physical and logical security controls with all newspapers available for inspection by the third-party auditors. We have developed a set of controls derived from the ISO 27001 and consistent with the SAS70 type II to this end, including the implementation of our service provider partners.

We also took advantage of the new vShield Edge and vCloud Director "monitor" complete virtual security, which provides a firewall stateful (again, newspapers are available for the audit), layer 2 VLANs and complete isolation of network layer 2. As a result, security and the implementation strategy automatically follow the application, regardless of the where he physically lands. (It will be more to this topic in another ticket blog.)You also receive complete role-based access control, authenticated against your own directory business so that you have the type access and authorization security that you're used to. »

AWS Lodge contends, a virtual firewall that does not provide a high level of security. You see it if there is an attack.

"They do not logs you off the firewall", said the Lodge. "If they are attacked they cannot see the logs to see if they actually get attacked." "They cannot see what is happening."

AWS maintains its network is secure and there is much to show for that to be true. But the situation changes when you start moving of virtual machines.

We'll get more into that in a future post on virtual networks and emerging awareness that require networks. Lodge and a host of others have a lot of insights into the topic that is worth exploring.

The bottom line: VMware offers a much more sophisticated than AWS service but flexibility and price AWS service make for a compelling alternative to VMware approach.

There are many other players in this space too. EnStratus is a cloud of world-class management service. Rackspace brings his own brand, with the acquisition of Cloudkick.

The new year? Our bet is that the cloud will become much more transparent. The difference is that by the end of 2011, everything is much more familiar to businesses and perhaps much easier to implement, too.

Updates to 10.0 dharma, rocks XBMC powerful additional and enhanced support [video] graphics acceleration (Lifehacker.com)

XBMC Updates to 10.0 Dharma, Rocks Awesome Add-on Support and Improved Graphic AccelerationWindows/Mac/Linux: XBMC, impressive open source and highly customizable media updates to XBMC 10.0 Dharma today with some serious changes under the hood - including an absolutely extraordinary complementary framework upgrade Center.

Last year at this time, XBMC team dropped the release of 9.11 Camelot. Camelot blew all further with a dramatically improved user interface and as your Media Center skins look us like a million bucks - literally, none of the visitors at my house never think that I have received free of charge.

In 2010, we saw various incarnations of the generation of Dharma as he squeezed beta and release candidate phase. From today, XBMC 10.0 Dharma is available for public release and it is quite an impressive upgrade. At first glance you might have trouble he say apart from 9.11 Camelot. Extraordinary style introduced in the latest version is always there and who better than ever with a few minor adjustments. The real magic in this release cycle is under the hood.

XBMC Updates to 10.0 Dharma, Rocks Awesome Add-on Support and Improved Graphic Acceleration

Let us be honest. I love XBMC, there is a good chance that you too love XBMC - he won five hive for best media center application and XBMC articles always collect much attention here. We have to claim that, historically, adding XBMC and customization experience XBMC was a walk in the Park. You have to comb forums XBMC.org read post after post and hope that make us the combing for you and write a nice guide. Modules were almost entirely hit or random and what worked in a cycle of generation may not work the next - or even between machines. This release cycle removes adhesive tape holding the additional support and replaces it with a complementary system based on the elegant and streamlined repository.

Sounds too good to be true? Check out the video below. I was able to install modules easily, to the right of the box, with a new installation. Instead of marinating in a lot of hand editing configuration files, look at how I easily download a new skin, add in some media scrapers and even add a video plugin to within a few minutes (any configuration or modification of the hand is necessary at any time).

XBMC Updates to 10.0 Dharma, Rocks Awesome Add-on Support and Improved Graphic Acceleration

If you're new to XBMC you think OH, well "that seemed easy enough!" but if you're a veteran of the XBMC, you are probably still in shock. I did not FTP in my installation XBMC, hand edit the configuration files or sacrifice all livestock to achieve. Adding media scrapers, music and modules subtitle, new skins, tools, videos and additional web interfaces to your Media Center remote control has never been this easy.

In addition to support additional awesome (and we do not insist enough what a great not forward this new framework complementary and repository is XBMC project) you will find even more improvements in the generation of the dharma, including:

Support for new media, including acceleration WebM VP8.Improved equipment for a large number of hardware configurations, including support for Windows Vista/7 and CrystalHD acceleration on all platforms - Linux and OS X users DXVA2 codecs will see major improvements with CrystalHD.Support for unencrypted Blu - ray playback.Integrated day including support for update or automatic update notifications.

Now, Craigslist has removed quietly section in all its international sites, including those in the Canada, Asia, Europe, South America and Africa.

When Craigslist closed section to the United States, he lost replaced the section with the "uncensored" Word, but the international arrest came with this any protest and no advertising.

Craigslist, explains section was created to requests from users to clean up sections of the site free online dating.

Subsequently at the request of many States of U.S. prosecutors, Craigslist has begun requiring a $ 10 fee paid by credit card to place an advertisement in this section work phone number. He also hired a lawyer vet each announcement of illegality and suggestions of underage girls. Craigslist was then attacked being greedy and to take advantage off the coast of prostitution, a strange burden for a company that is constantly criticized by analysts to load does not more (fresh company only for employment and housing lists select markets) services.

Craigslist argued that shut down the service would simply force ads on other services with less care and increased spam in other sections.

NASA engineers offer combining a rail gun and a light spacecraft into orbit [Nasa] (Gizmodo.com) supersonic combustion scramjet

NASA has worked on the creation of a new and less expensive to launch spacecraft method. Their latest proposal involves rail, rail gun and a supersonic combustion scramjet. Here is what they are trying to do:

In April, President Obama urged the NASA to come up with, among other things, a cheaper than conventional rocket on the launch of the spacecraft method. In September, the Agency engineers float plan would save millions of dollars in propellant, improve the safety of the astronaut and allow more frequent flights. What need is two miles from train, a plane can fly at 10 times the speed of sound and a Jolt large enough power for a small town in light.

The system calls for a two-mile rail length gun launch a scramjet supersonic combustion will be then fly to 200,000 feet. The supersonic combustion scramjet will then be a payload into orbit of fire and return to Earth. The process is more complex as a rocket launch, but the engineers say that it is also more flexible. With it, NASA could orbit satellite of 10,000 pounds a day and send a ship lived towards the Moon follows on a fraction of the propellant used by rockets today.

This may seem too awesome ever be a reality. But unlike other plans of rocket-less entry space, each technology is sufficiently advanced that tests may be held within 10 years, said Stan Starr, a physicist at NASA's Kennedy Space Center. Scramjet NASA hit Mach 10-12 seconds; last spring, supersonic scramjet Boeing X-51 a Mach 5 to record 200 seconds. Rail guns come on too. Navy tests electromagnetic launch system to replace hydraulics catapult fighter aircraft carrier. "We have all the ingredients," explains Paul Bartolotta, NASA Aeronautics engineer working on the project. "We are just now how to bake the cake."

Rev Up The Rail Gun
A linear 240,000 horsepower engine converts 180 megawatts an electromagnetic force that propels a supersonic scramjet carrying spacecraft on a two mile long track. The boat speeds of 0 to 1 100 mph (Mach 1.5) in less than 60 seconds - faster, but less than 3 G, safe for manned space flight.

Fire the supersonic combustion scramjet
The driver raises a Turbo speed and launches the runway. Once the vessel striking Mach 4, the air flowing through the contribution of jet is fast enough that it compresses heats 3 000?F and ignites hydrogen in the Chamber of combustion, producing tens of thousands of pounds of thrust.

Get into orbit
At an altitude of 200 feet, there is not enough air for the supersonic combustion scramjet now traveling at Mach 10, to generate thrust. Spaceflight now begins. Separate two boats and the heights of supersonic scramjet down out of the way top gear fires rockets tail which it draw on orbit.

Paste the landing.
The supersonic combustion scramjet slows and uses its engines to fly to the land of a runway. Once the spacecraft delivers its payload into orbit, he returned to the atmosphere and flat to the launch site. The two boats may be ready for another mission within 24 hours after landing.

Depreciation full bonus extended to 2011 (Aero News)

Congress adopted, President Obama signed compromise tax legislation which includes the extension of the depreciation bonus of 100% of assets worth up to $500,000, acquired after September 8, 2010 by December 31 of the next year.

Costs may be a new or used aircraft purchased in 2010 and 2011.

The proposed tax, first described by the White House would be allowing 100 percent load procurement business investments in capital assets and an acceleration, or "bonus", 50% for 2012 depreciation allowance. An extension of depreciation bonus at the end of 2010 has already signed in law. Non-commercial aircraft buyers will have an extra year to implement the service plan and qualify for procurement expenses and bonus depreciation.

"We couldn't be happier with bipartisan effort which resulted in a rapid passage of tax bill by both houses of Congress and now President, said GAMA, President and CEO Pete Bunce." "" This important legislation contains two provisions which are essential to the recovery of general aviation manufacturing industry. The first allows depreciation from 100 per cent of investments, including aircraft engines avionics and other updates for aircraft in 2011 and amortization of 50 per cent of investments carried out in 2012.  Because of their longer production cycles, general aviation aircraft are also eligible for amortization of 100 percent in 2012 and 50% in 2013. The Bill also extends the important research and development (R & D) for two years, tax credit which will enable companies to receive credit for research expenses (2010) this year and also allow firms to plan for 2011. »

Bunce added, "this Bill will help ensure the certainty and our manufacturers incentives need to start encouraging investment and creating demand growth."  More importantly, these provisions will be stimulate employment growth in 2011 and beyond and supports a critical sector of the global economy and the United States.

"NBAA is pleased that the administration and Congressional leaders consider additional means that tax incentives may be applied to investments in strategic assets, including aircraft, said NBAA President and CEO Ed Bolen when the Bill was adopted at the end of last week."

New inspectors in line-date can show Mr. or Ms. Wrong (NY Times)

It doesn't matter if your date is smart and beautiful. How do you know that you're not flirting with a felon?

Minimal costs, emerging culture business wants to help you discover by nearly 1500 or potential that you encounter on match.com, eHarmony flames running background checks the nation dating websites.

In the same time, at least two States, New York and New Jersey, have begun to regulate the sites of the Internet, and legal experts say they believe that changes to accountability legislation that protect these sites are on the horizon.

And you think that your mother was the only one who wanted to test your love life.

Focus on background screenings comes as some 20 million Americans are of dating sites, more than double the number, according to research firm IBISWorld five years ago. While they find casual dates and even love, they also meet married people do seem to be unique or, worse still, recognized and sexual predators convicted criminals.

Nobody has put a number on how violence follows dating sites, according to the groups to keep track of rape and other violent crimes, such as the Department of Justice Bureau of Justice Statistics and National Center for victims of crime.

Yet, many crime stories begin with two people mutually skimming online dating profiles. Consider the case largely of Jeffrey Marsalis, Philadelphia, serial rapist who met his victims on match.com.

These perils autour since the dawn of the Internet, an ideal way of camouflage complex. But now that dating online is an industry of billions of dollars, defenders of public safety, government representatives and enterprising companies are demanding more guarantees.

It is not known if it is possible, however, detect people efficiently and make the sites more truthful. After all, members are not always honest about their age and weight.

"What we want to do is provide some security, said Robert Buchholz, a York retired, with Andrew j. Scott, a Boca Raton, Florida, former police chief founded MyMatchChecker.com police captain, a website that went live in April, allow individuals to request verification of history to anyone they met on a dating site."

M. Buchholz and Mr. Scott, who have more than 30 years experience in application of law, said that having inspired girls to try to make safer online dating. Their business offers a research base bottom of $9.95.

Most Web sites, a flurry of phone portable apps but, quick and easy to order a pizza history checks: Connect simply facts, such as a name and birth date. ValiMate, the creator of the messaging application national criminal research even allows users to send the audit results to a friend for added security.

Check the date of Intelius, encourages users to "look before you connect." The application is marketed to women who wish to perform a background check on Romeo aspiring "at the time necessary to restore your brilliant lip." (Industry professionals say that predators are usually men).

State officials are also push for safer Internet dating. A law which takes effect this month in the State of New York, Internet Dating Safety Act, requires that sites display common sense safety tips, like "meet in a public place".

Assemblywoman Audrey i. Pheffer, a proponent of the law of the Internet, said he grew his realization that dating online has become pervasive, even among the people that she "ever dream" would pursue romance online.

Some States have considered similar but ultimately rejected legislation. New York is like a past in 2008 New Jersey, which also requires dating sites with a contribution to inform users if they do criminal background checks (most do not).

This legislation was sponsored by True.com, one of the first major companies dating online to members of the screen to determine if they are married, criminal or sex offender (approximately 2% of those attempting to register are rejected, they said). Ruben Buell, President of the company, said as the type of checks carried out were inexpensive. "You're talking cents per check.

More online dating business question whether this control can be effective. They argue that because the State and County data bases are incomplete, controls give singles a false sense of security. Proponents of criminal projections concede that they are imperfect, because databases vary in quality and availability. For example, some counties do not comply with the digital files. Others provide data on sex offenders.

"If I knew really has great ability for us to allow anyone on the site should not be on the site, I would," said Mandy Ginsberg, Executive Director and Executive Vice-President of match.com. Audit history, she said, could lead single to think of all the world they encounter on the site is safe. (Mrs Pheffer said that she was originally wanted background but decided against them for the same reason).

Critics also point out that businesses that perform background screenings are not necessarily perfect. Some abuse information. Another concern is to mobile applications, which may provide personal information to individuals who may abuse.

Braden Cox, a lawyer NetChoice, policy group that advocates for the Internet, companies said background screenings were well-meaning but most could be thwarted.

"Fortunately, most people are good people on these sites," said Mr. Cox, who speaks from experience: a few weeks ago, he married a woman he met on match.com.

Dating sites have no incentive to their members of the police. The Communications Decency Act disclaims responsibility Internet service providers because the sites are not considered as their pages - information publishers are members. The reasoning is that sites would not be able to operate if they were responsible for any posted by their users. Lawyers tried to circumvent the law, but "they usually fail," said Brian Carver, an Assistant Professor in the school of information at the University of California, Berkeley. "Each startup depends on this protection.

Parry Aftab, counsel and expertise, security, said that it is more hearing on alarming involving dating online as pedophiles wooing unmarried mothers to get close to their children. Expects there will be challenges this immunity if sites accept money from members and have a knowledge of criminal behaviour.

In the meantime, she advises caution singles. She said: "Don't give in your heart so quickly,".

Database security reminder: do not make it down your guard (eWeek Security Watch)

18 December 2010 1 H 54

Compromise can happen quickly - something Sentrigo people have recently recalled the attackers came knocking on their door digital.

December 1st, the company deployed an instance of Oracle running on Amazon EC2 database. Six days later, he was pwn?s. Fortunately, no data production was inside - testing data, just as the instance was only there if the company could demonstrate security software.

"In this case, we were indirect capabilities to scan the database and find issues and set configurations, vulnerability assessment", explained Sentrigo CTO Slavik El. "We did not follow in place, but we do not deploy rules blocking." So we were alerted to attack and at that time there, he became interesting we let attackers continue to see real-time, real-world attack evolution.

Attackers have discovered the instance some simple port scan servers on the Internet, he said. When they found an open port, they identified and Oracle instance running behind him. From there, they could have access to the database and the escalation of privileges.

"The initial connection was conducted on a demo account without privileges by brute - force password", he said. "Senior level privileges elevation exploited a vulnerability in one of the components Oracle (OLAP)." Then, in these privileges the hacker took control of the operating system in dbms_scheduler. »

He admitted the instance Oracle has not been fully patched - they were using version 11.107 - but was struck by the speed in which compromise passed yet.

Andy Feit, Vice President of marketing at Sentrigo, said that anonymity is not true protection.

"Nobody knew which server, it was, he was just" said Feit.

He added that the situation could occur with any provider of cloud or a server owned by the company outside of the firewall and that Amazon has a "nice built-in firewall" and monitors outgoing bodies to prevent port scanning traffic.

"On the other hand, in the future, I certainly see Amazon and similar providers offering much more such as out-of-the-box IDS/IPS and other controls network," said technical director.

The moral of the story - expose your database on the Internet without appropriate including firewall security and access controls and make sure that the database is fully patched.

We have developed our data - our Web sites, photos, bookmarks, e-mail and more - on their sites. But they can and do change their terms of service will, by what they please with what we have on their servers. And sometimes they just closed the services they provided. They may do so for the right reasons or those absurd. It does not matter. The point is, they can.

As mentioned here a few months ago, we all need a Plan B in almost everything we do online these days. If we give a point of Virginia to our communications, we invite to slow us down.

Nielsen: Most used 360 Xbox console, Wii most played offline (PC World) (Yahoo!)

Microsoft's Xbox 360 is the most used console among users aged 13 or older, according to a new survey from media tracker Nielsen. "Most used," meaning everything from playing games to watching movies or catching some tunes to surfing the internet.

The company used metered console tracking (similar to the "people meter" box the company employees to track TV and cable viewing habits) to gauge "electronically measured hours," which revealed users ages 13 and older 4.9 "total hours" spent a week with the Xbox 360, compared with 4.1 hours on the PlayStation 3 and 1.4 hours on the Wii.

Let's break that down. Males and females ages 13 and older spent 6.1 and 2.6 hours a week (respectively) using the Xbox 360, compared with 5.2 (males) and 2.1 (females) hours with Sony's PlayStation 3, gold 1.7 (males) and 1.1 (females) hours with Nintendo's Wii.

Any surprises there? Perhaps. It's intriguing to see an apples-to-apples comparison use for a change. Install base figures have no impact on these figures, since Nielsen's measuring equally sized populations.

That's only half the story, however. The company also breaks down use time on each console by function (though we're back to user-reported data here, as opposed to neutrally metered).

In share of console time among users ages 13 and older, 62% use the Xbox 360 to play video games, a figure that drops to just 49% for PlayStation 3 owners goal which soars to 69% for Wii owners.

How's that break down for online and offline games? 28% use the Xbox 360 to play online games, while just 19% use the PS3 for online gaming, and a mere 12% play online games with the Wii.

By contrast, 27% use the PS3 to watch DVD or Blu - ray movies, compared with 11% on the Xbox 360, the Wii can't play DVD or Blu - ray movies).

Shift to streaming videos, however, pp. suddenly takes the lead with 20% of Wii console use time, compared with just 10% of time spent with the Xbox 360 and 9% with the PS3.

Nielsen says it'll have more data to share in January 2011. I'll be paying attention. These are some of the most intriguing (and legitimate) comparison metrics I've seen already.

Conceded by Democrats. reduction of tax passes (lounge)

This is bipartisan unity looks like. Rush Limbaugh and Nancy Pelosi agree on one thing - they really wanted really spend reduction much the Obama tax. City dimming lights can help reduce smog (Scientific American)

LA at nightSAN FRANCISCO - city lights can do more to hide a dark sky: they could worsen indirectly daytime smog. Measurements of light pollution in Los Angeles showed a better than expected chemists - bright enough to destroy chemical products that would otherwise be to purify the air during a night glow.

"Light pollution can slow night cleaning," said Harald Stark of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. He is based in Boulder, Colorado and the results reported on 14 December here to a meeting of the American Geophysical Union.

"I think that someone had thought about it," says Jochen Stotz, an atmospheric chemist at the University of California, Los Angeles. "It shows that it is really important to what happens during the night" for the quality of air, adds Stotz, who was not involved in the study of NOAA. "We see how important."

Surprising is the only moment that - a hypothesis, Stark told a press conference. The chemistry of the formation of smog is very complex and the effects of the lights of the city are difficult to quantify without research, he said.

For several flights this summer NOAA aircraft, the Stark and his team discovered that the glow of Los Angeles is 10 000 times smaller than the light of the Sun, but still 25 times brighter than the full moon. The researchers calculated that so much light would be sufficient to break the nitrite in the air. Nitrite (NO3) indirectly reduces the levels of ozone during the day, because it reacts with other nitrogen compounds which are involved in the formation of ozone reactions. So then that areas dark nitrite is a cleaner night in L.A. it can be reduced, with the effect of exacerbating smog.

Impact could be worst cities to the North in winter, said stark, because the clouds and snow cover have a multiplier effect on light pollution.

Stotz, said that he and his colleagues now plan to include the effects of light pollution in their atmospheric chemistry models for attempting to quantify the results of the NOAA. Even if the result is an increase of several percentage points in ozone levels, it can make a significant difference to the communities who are already struggling to remain within the limits imposed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, says Stark.

Cities can discover outside lighting control may have more advantages than the savings of energy and keep bright stars.

Impulsivity Traveler: museums of small University of Cambridge, mass., competing major galleries in Boston (Washington Post)

A dog in three dimensions POPs to me wall so realistic that I expect to start barking at any time. Behind me, my mother is my girl of 16 months, Chloe, who is a wall and onto the air in front of it. I have to pass on their side and realize it attempts to capture a hologram is zoom it like a comet red stripes. Vaguely I wonder if the holograms could be bad for the spirit of a baby.

I assumes that if there is anyone who knows the answer to this question, they would be here at the MIT Museum, which displays the Massachusetts Institute of Technology research in areas such as Robotics and holography.

We have an excursion to discover the museums of the University of Cambridge, a journey inspired by the desire of my grandmother to review a Museum at Harvard University where she saw flowers glass when she was in high school in the 1950s. Search this site online, I discovered that Cambridge has a multitude of museums and explore appeared them to be a good pastime for a chilly weekend in New England.

We start at the MIT Museum, skimming to the exhibition "sampling MIT" current research, which is fascinating to some people, including 7 years apparently stunned by a map showing the impact of malaria worldwide, but a little dry for my taste. I'm more interested in the robotic floor exhibit featuring artificial intelligence works at the University.

Some robots look like nothing more than boxes of circuits and wires. As the gigantic Minsky arm, several joints 1968 with tubes and wires that spans the length thereof as electronic veins, others resemble humans in a certain way. But the most famous robot exhibition is Kismet, which has a face that can show emotions and research raises human feelings, too. Febrile Kismet, as vague Chloe to prove point scientists.

We make a short detour to discover model ships at Hart Nautical Gallery of MIT before at the Peabody Museum of archaeology and Ethnology of Harvard. Founded in 1866, he is one of the oldest anthropological museums of the world and is home to thousands of artifacts of indigenous peoples around the world, with galleries dedicated to native American, Latin America and the Pacific Islands.

Large poster intimately feathers and beaded Lakota headgear, towering totems, Northwest and a delicate Kachina dolls collection gallery. But the most interesting elements for me are those that are not there, those who hung where now hang sign read: "Objects in this case have been removed from the protection of native American graves and repatriation Act." Although the Museum was apparently a good relationship with tribes - a of current exhibitions examines "The disputed West" through the eyes of the Lakota people and co-curated by artist Lakota Butch ThunderHawk - there is a fascinating and the comfortable balancing act between learning from these elements and just ask how they were obtained.

The entire museum gives me a kind of Indiana Jones strange and exciting feeling, the Gallery of the Pacific Islands. Couinent wooden floors, and dim lights illuminate glass case lines containing items such as an ornamental nose pig-defences of New Guinea and supernatural puppets - in search of java. Yellow card display of artifacts from the exotic lands, it is easy to imagine the adventurers of the turn of the century back to Harvard to catalogue their treasures.

The next day, I visited the Museum Sackler of Mr. Arthur, which houses the renowned three Harvard art museum pieces. (The other two – the Fogg and Busch-Reisinger - are closed for renovation until 2013). Objects in the Museum are exquisite and include former Islamic texts, sculptures and works of Van Gogh and Gauguin, Renoir, Monet hang in a beautiful Gallery of classic novel.

Harvard also has a collection of modern art a huge I am afraid is lost on me. Laying down a huge Jackson Pollock painting, I remember Chloe reaction for robot Kismet. I guess that I need too, faces or recognizable to appreciate art forms.

The next morning, Museum of natural history of Harvard is swarming with children, press their face against the case of meteorites and minerals - more than 5 000 specimens from around in the world, sparkling like gigantic blue bright, shiny black, electric yellow rock candies and other imaginable colours. There is Gallery after the animal world, jewel-like and butterflies and huge nightmare crickets beetles autour taxidermied Gallery. Fossils and skeletons are staggering, especially famous for the Harvard; Mastodon kronosaurus marine reptiles 42 feet in length; and a huge whale skeleton with a curtain of black baleen hanging from his jaw.

But the highlight is certainly glass flowers and I watch lips my grandmother a little form "OOH" as it enters in the gallery. "They are really beautiful that I remember," she breathes. And they are nothing like I imagined. When I heard the words 'glass flowers' for the first time, I thought they would be big, bright and stylized. Instead of this, they resemble real flowers perfect in every tiny detail. How can it be manufactured of glass?

There is little fuzzy goldenrod flowers, wild flowers with thin clumps of roots, Mexican cosmos grêles stem. Thousands of models are made from 1887 by a team of father and son of glass artisans who work on the actual specimens from around the world. "Oh, my God, MOM, look,", exclaims a little boy, and online after row in the Gallery, children - and adult - Netoperator_wibby and allegation in disbelief that these blooms are artificial, not collected on the ground.

Museums of Harvard and MIT are overshadowed by two enormous Boston institutions that provide science and art on a large scale: the Museum of fine art, which has recently opened a new wing, and the Museum of science. But the small university museums, I visited are also fascinating and very detailed. You could spend a whole weekend here and never set foot in Boston. And believe me, you won't miss a thing.

Insider leaks on the iPhone from Apple, AMD, Seagate, linked to the firm of Mountain View (Mercury News)

In trading with the expansion of ties with Silicon Valley Insider federal investigation, prosecutors Thursday unveiled criminal against five persons linked to a local networking expert suspected secret on the Apple iPhone pass company charges Advanced Micro Devices, Seagate Technology and other companies.

Four men were charged with save tens of thousands of dollars reduce hedge fund investors and others by Mountain View-based global research tips. Complaint filed against them in New York City alleges that they knew that the information they were swapping was highly confidential.

In an intercepted conversation request for documents, one of the men describes how he had just learned about Apple iPad, which at that time was still underway.

"I think it is called K K48."... "This is the internal name," according to the complaint. "Apple, you can get fired for saying K48"... outside of a, you know, for a meeting with no people inside K48."" It is crazy how they are about it.

Among those charged was James Fleishman, aged 41, Santa Clara, global sales Research Director who pays employees at other companies to provide their knowledge of the industry for hedge funds and other experts. He made a brief appearance without comment on the charges in U.S. District Court in San Jose and was released on his promise to raise $700,000 in bail. It is scheduled to be arraigned then in New York

month.

Fleishman, a graduate of San Jose State that prosecutors said $585,000 received in total compensation first global 2008 in 2009, is the second main global employee charged with the investigation. Don Ching Trang Chu, 56 - formerly described by the company as his "bridge to data - sources and experts in Asia" was arrested on November 24 at his home in Somerset, NJ on charges of wire fraud and securities. Global primary has broken since its links with the Chu.

Also accused Thursday were Mark Longoria, 44, an employee base of Sunnyvale Advanced Micro Devices, who was accused of leaking confidential on chip and 39 years old Walter Shimoon, Flextronics international in San Diego, accused of having disclosed secrets on Apple products and made the remark of iPad manufacturer. Other defendants are Daniel DeVore, a former Dell and 37 years old, Manosha Karunatilaka, a charge account at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing global supply manager.

Longoria, Round Rock, Texas; Shimoon, San Diego. Karunatilaka, Marlborough, Massachusetts and Fleishman were arrested at their home Thursday on charges of conspiracy to commit securities and wire fraud. DeVore, which previously had been charged with the same charges and pleaded guilty on December 8, became a witness cooperating, according to court records.

Longoria, the Karunatilaka the Shimoon, the DeVore were consultants that global research paid to transmit information on their companies or other persons in the hedge funds from the first world and other clients of the investor, according to prosecutors. Fleishman is charged to help coordinate these conversations.

Enlargement - survey that recently invited the FBI raids on several hedge funds and the issuance of subpoenas to other businesses - is the continuation of last year of the Galleon Group founder of hedge funds Raj Rajaratnam and 22 others, 14 of them have pleaded guilty.

The more than $400,000 as global primary paid four consultants participate in calls telephone with customers "is an indication of the value placed on information," FBI assistant director responsible for Janice Fedarcyk said in a release. "The information by the four"consultants"went well beyond eligible; market research" It was information. »

Main spokesman Dan Charnas world said that Fleishman joined the company in June 2006 and "has been on leave." Without further comment, he acknowledged that the other four accused were consultants to the company, but that their relationship with the first world "has ended."

The complaint said investigators relied on the assistance of several witnesses with cooperating with an unidentified world senior manager who "has not yet been charged" and agreed to help the probe "in" hopes to receive a reduced sentence. Another was Richard Beng Choo Lee, who is co-founder of the capital of San Jose Spherix hedge funds and who had helped in the pursuit of the Chu.

Any illegal activity suspected if in the past three years, prosecutors claim, with the regime involving Apple unfolding in mid-2009, by the first part of this year. Apart from Shimoon comments on the iPad, the charges against him come largely information he is accused of passing on the Apple iPhone.

That provided Flextronics "components and camera power Chargers" used in the iPhone, said complaint, "Apple often shared with Flextronics information about future Apple products in development." Shimoon was in a good position to learn about these details, the complaint noted, because he was a principal Flextronics business development "involved in developments in contract with Apple."

He was accused of leaks of confidential sales figures for iPhone as well as details on some of the features in a future version of the gadget. But he was nervous on the information provided and at any given time would have said he détesterais than anyone recording conversations, adding, "that would really suck if you have saved all calls."

Apple spokesperson Kristin Huguet refused to comment.

Advanced Micro Devices employed Longoria is therefore competent to provide accurate predictions of quarterly company - finance before the data has been made public - that Fleishman have been rented him during a conversation recorded as "one of our best experts" who was "strong customer demand."

Noting in a statement that Longoria worked at AMD January 2007 of 22 October this year, when he resigned, said chip manufacturer it cooperates with prosecutors and "a policy concerning the work of its employees outside of AMD, including arrangements such as networks of experts tell consulting".

Seagate, Scotts Valley, refused to comment.

3 M camcorder projector shoot ' n CP40 part (ziffdavis.com)

CCD Resolution5 megapixelsVideo registration FormatFlash MemoryLCD size2.4 inchesWeight5.64 ozMore

$299 (List) 3 M camcorder projector shoot ' n CP40 is a camcorder HD pocket with a unique twist: it integrates a projector. The CP40 can projecting your recordings on a wall and even display images, videos and PowerPoint presentations from a microSD card. It is more a demi-caméscope, half-projector as just a camcorder with a gimmick - composite video input even lets you connect other devices, and their content project. As a portable projector, it is fun and useful as a camcorder HD, however, it is not very impressive. You can spend less than $100 and get a Pocket video camera which offers much better video quality, storage internal and more functionality - such as Cisco Flip UltraHD 8 GB ($ 199.99, 3.5 stars) or the editors' Choice Sony Bloggie Touch ($ 199.99, 4-star).

Design and functionality
Brilliant white rectangular device is slightly larger than most handheld video cameras, but to 4.9 by 2.4 by 0.9 inches (DED) and 5.6 ounces, is always easily in a pocket. Beneath the LCD screen 2.4 inches are touch-sensitive controls: a multidirectional to navigate menus and buttons for video shooting, or pictures and to pass in the projector mode.

Like most Pocket camcorders, the lens on the CP40 offers zoom optics, that it includes a macro focus mode no more. Subjects should be a few feet later in order for the lens to focus on them. If you need a camcorder with a better lens, the Kodak Playtouch ($229.95, 3.5 star) has a macro focusing close-up, while Sony offers autofocus Bloggie Touch mode.

The CP40 has 14 MB integrated - sufficient storage to hold a PowerPoint file to load on the projector, but not enough for even a minute video recording high definition. At this price, I expect more integrated storage. Fortunately, you can add up to 32 GB of storage via microSD card slot and memory cards are a convenient way to load some files on the device.

It is easy to transfer files and outside the CP40. It connects to a computer via the mini-USB cable included, and once connected, you can drag and drop files and outside the camcorder. The fresh CP40 its connected lithium-ion battery, but it also includes a wall, charger if you use the projector for long periods of time. In addition to the composite video inputs and USB connections standard, the CP40 also offers a HDMI output, so you can play your film on a HDTV. A version of the $40 ArcSoft Media Converter is included with the camcorder that will convert almost any video file in a format that can be played back on the projector and can also secret PowerPoint slide film.

Performance
Despite its ranking of high-definition video produced by the camcorder is not impressive. The resolution is limited to 720 p at 30 frames per second. more recent generation HD camcorders can offer something more smooth frames 60 fps at 720 p, if this is true 1080p high-definition video. In my tests, even when I lutté - digital image stabilization remain immobile, video was still choppy. Overall, graphics performance is no match for large Pocket UltraHD Flip or the Sony Touch Bloggie camcorders prowess. Audio capture is large - topics in all my distant comings records.

Read still images or videos through the projector is fun and the quality is bad, but limited to MP4 files in VGA resolution (640 by 480), and the internal speaker is not very strong. This means that all your videos HD will be read with black bars above and below. Videos can be scheduled up to 4.5 metres (diagonal) at a distance of 6.8 feet and look reasonably bright, but they get quickly darker you get later. Turn you a ring from the camera to your images an emphasis, a process, you will need to repeat each time that you change your distance from the wall. At their best images look crisp and colourful, but there are a lot of work required to keep them in this way.

If you want a portable projector, the Shoot M 3 'n CP40 hand is a good value and can be useful in a pinch. But if you're in the market is a good HD Pocket camcorder, the Flip Ultra HD and Sony Bloggie Touch cost much less and higher quality video and a better user experience.

Most critical digital camcorder:
• 3 M camcorder projector shoot ' n share CP40
• Zoom Q3HD Handy recorder
• Cisco Flip MinoHD 8 GB 2 hours (2010)
• Camera video Kodak Playtouch
• Cisco Flip UltraHD 8 GB 2 hours (2010)

Redesigned classical music site offers unique price plan (Macworld) (Yahoo!)

At this time last year, I wrote an article about classical music download sites. Since then, a number of new sites is coming along, and others have made changes to adapt to the demands of the market. One of these sites, eClassical, has undergone a major rejuvenation cure and has launched a single price system.

One of the problems in the sale of digital music is find a way to price elements enough. It is generally by song or album, which is the way to the iTunes store, and most other sites to calculate prices. eClassical, prices on the other hand, his music by duration.

Since you cannot justify a "song" for many classical music eClassical tracks and albums by the second sale prices. .2 Cents per second for MP3 and FLACs files and 3 cents per second to 24-bit (high definition) FLACs eClassical price strategy means that most of the albums are cheaper than elsewhere, but the price of each album differs depending on its length.

Buyers won't have to pay the same for an album of 40 minutes ($4.80) as a disk of 70 minutes ($8.40) and are less expensive than the same music sold on the iTunes store. For example, the latest in a series of Masaaki Suzuki Bach cantatas on eClassical is $7.98, compared to $9.99 on the iTunes store, or $8.99 on Amazon.com. And eClassical sell you files FLAC - audio files without any apparent loss in Apple Lossless, but not playable native mode via iTunes - for the same price.

Swedish eClassical has only a handful of labels at the moment, Bis Records and Hänssler Classic, two well known indie labels, but it would be good to see more join the site and to adopt this method of pricing.

Appellate court upholds ban de vol à voile 'World of Warcraft' bot (PC Magazine)

World of Warcraft: Cataclysm

A Court of appeal, this week confirmed lower judgment which prohibits the use of an automatic robot who played for users of "World of Warcraft" in their absence, but found that the use of the tool does not constitute a violation of copyright law.

Use the tool gliding format industries is a violation of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act anti-circumvention clause, the ninth circuit ruled. But violating terms of service, WoW, does not automatically equal a violation of copyright law.

Product theft sailing format facilitates the room unattended. FAQ page of gliding WoW admits that gliding is against the terms of service WoW because players must agree to a contract which, among other things, prohibits maintain "any connection not authorized for the game or the service. The bottom line: use at your own risk, said the gliding FAQ.

Blizzard and Vivendi Games, Inc. continued glider creator Michael Donnelly and format industries, in February 2008 for violations of intellectual property. Blizzard wanted the Court to stop the Donnellys gliding to distribute and to award monetary damages. In 2009, a district court ruled in favour of Blizzard, guilty of secondary copyright infringement format and delivered a judgment of $ 6.5 million.

Decision this week reversed part of copyright.

"We conclude that for breach of a contract to constitute an infringement of the copyright holder, there must be a link between the State and exclusive rights of the licensor of copyright", the Court said. "Here, WoW players not committed a breach of copyright for gliding in violation of the [terms of use]." FORMAT is not responsible for the violation of secondary copyright law which requires the existence of a direct violation of copyright law. »

The decision confirms however, an injunction because the gliding effectively bypasses anti-bot detection program Blizzard, called Director, in violation of the DMCA.

The Court "Aircraft has no function other than to facilitate the reading of WoW," said.

As a result, "We affirm entry of the district court of the of a permanent injunction against the format to prevent future violations," he concluded.

As regards the 6.5 million, the ninth circuit he transferred to the lower court, which will be reconsider how Donnelly and format will have to pay.

€“ required non-default profile? (Thincomputing.net)

Helge "UserProfie" Klein reveals why mandatory profiles are not secure. So now he tells us:

Mandatory profiles are generally considered to be fast and secure because they usually are of small size and cannot be changed by the user. While it is true - mandatory profiles will remain pristine indefinitely - there are more, security, read-only access.

Mandatory profiles (PM) is a variant of roaming profiles: a copy on a file server is copied to the host of the RDS session during logon. Copy local resulting is secured with filesystem ACL to grant full access to the user, but nobody else does (more administrators and SYSTEM). Everything is safe - except in the case of mandatory profiles.
A user profile includes not only data file system, but a registry hive (stored in the file NTUSER.MAN) that is mounted HKU\ and accessible since a session through the well-known name HKCU. Unlike file system, registry permissions are not changed for logon because it don't need - at least with roaming profiles where the copy of each hive already has the appropriate permissions.
Not the case with mandatory profiles. Conformément à l'article how customize default user profiles Windows 7 (and more old CRT) creating a mandatory profile involves changing registry permissions on the copy full access to "Everyone". That many users are simultaneously connected to a host of the RDS session, each server registry is composed of many user hives are read and writeable by anyone, not just the owner should be individual user profile.
Thus on a RDS host session where mandatory profiles are used, a user can simply open Regedit, navigate to HKU\ and read/write at will.

Canadian government approves iBookstore (Macworld) (Yahoo!)

The Department of Canadian Heritage announced she has reviewed and approved officially Apple†™ s creation of iBookstore, thus opening the door to increased selection and local content more tense € ™ s library online for our cousins in the North.

This type of examination is normally by the Minister of Canadian Heritage and official languages whenever a foreign company made a significant investment in an activity which has the potential to affect Canadian culture. Its objective is to determine whether the investment will bring a â €œnet benefitâ

According to a press release issued by the Government agency, Apple is committed to provide five main benefits for Canadians: new jobs and of better services, assistance to Canadian publishers by creating and improving e-books, titles in both official languages of the country, promote increased opportunities for authors and publishers and better access to Aboriginal title.

FBI accused of piracy OpenBSD (TGDaily)

Finally break its decade NDA enforced silence, former NETSEC CTO Gregory Perry revealed that the devs (allegedly) helped the plant "a number of backdoors" FBI's encryption OpenBSD.

Perry confirmed stolen door hacks in an e-mail to Theo de Raadt, OpenBSD project leader in the 1990s.

The email said: "I wanted to make you aware of the fact put FBI implemented a number of backdoors and side channel which leakage mechanisms in the FCO, for the express purpose of monitoring site VPN encryption system key to implemented by EOUSA, the parent organization to the FBI."

Continuing to talk about the year 2003 when Perry OpenBSD lost millions of dollars the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) develops new military technology grants.

"It is also probably the reason why you lost your DARPA funding, they most probably caught wind of the fact that these backdoors were present and that he would not only create derivative products based on the same."

Immediately after receiving the email, Theo de Raadt transmitted its content to everyone on the calling code audits OpenBSD mailing list to ensure safety.

In a declaration De Raadt said: "it is alleged that some developers-ex (and society, they worked for) accepted money from U.S. Government put the gates stolen our network stack."

He continued, "given that we had the first IPSEC stack available free of charge, large parts of the code are now found in many other projects/products." More than 10 years, IPSEC code went through many changes and fixes, so it is not known what the real impact of these allegations. »

It is true that technologists wonder if this email is legitimate or simply rubbish. Perry says have been steering technique for NETSEC ten years ago. NETSEC was apparently the deal closes professional services with the security architecture and engineering as well as a 24/7 Office of United States computer emergency response team.

Curiously, failed attempts to contact the site, and there is no formal evidence that Perry is Director technical enterprise.

TechNewsWorld contacted Chris Wysopal, co-founder and CTO of Veracode to get an idea where not an agency of the Government in fact put a door code back into open source code.

"There are a few things that way," said Wysopal. "Is that if the Government had a contract with an organization to implement a back door, which would be a secret government that expires after a certain period of time." If I can see how a NDA about it will expire. »

But Wysopal admits that it would be difficult to detect the backdoors if they exist.

"You need to make an in-depth analysis of line-by-line of the code and to seek different side effects which may have the code," explained the Wysopal. He added: "If you are not an expert in crypto, I don't think you'd find the backdoor by just browsing the code".

Rumours are that the Government has put door code stolen in algorithms encrypted in the past, adds validity to the claims of Perry.

Regardless of the question if it is true or not, Raadt hopes that the community will find no problem in the code, but intends to take no further action in court on this subject.

Can kill Rush Limbaugh tax cut much? (Salon)

Can Rush Limbaugh kill the tax cut deal?

The u.s. Senate after shrug off the coast of the amendments proposed by Jim DeMint and Bernie Sanders, massively voted to approve the tax cut much on Wednesday afternoon, 81-19. Attention now turns to the House, where some are asking if the Tea Party angst and Rush Limbaugh will harass be sway enough Republicans to the crossing agreement endanger.

December 10, Limbaugh said that "I hope now that the tax agreement fails." I say it directly and officially. "Political scientist Jonathan Bernstein followed in writing that he remembers"lots of examples of House Republicans challenging Rush Limbaugh on a large scale in the last twenty years vote." "But still waiting for political analysts ' consensus holds that the tax agreement pass, regardless of the grousing. Democratic opposition in the House appears to be wither on the vine and a handful of Republican members have come directly and said they would vote for the transaction in all circumstances.

This list of the bastions includes the hardest of the hardcore, usual suspects: Michele Bachmann Mike Pence, Minnesota, Indiana, Jason Chaffetz Jeff Flake, Utah in Arizona, John Campbell California and Scott Garrett of New Jersey.

Spence fired the latest cross against the agreement Tuesday evening, in an interview Sean Hannity of Fox.

"I have been fighting since last summer to extend to all tax rates." I've said on national radio in summer that we need to ensure that no American would see a tax increase on January first, not one, "said pence."

"And frankly I've struggled with is the right thing to do here. But at the end of the day, I just came to the conclusion that the American people did not vote for the stimulus, they did not vote for the deficits, they did not vote for debt more, they've step vote for more uncertainty into the second November tax code. And so I vote for the tax agreement when it comes to the floor of the House of representatives. I think it is a bad deal for taxpayers who does little to create jobs, and I cannot support. »

So far, evidence of a groundswell in support of the pence position are scarce. But there is nevertheless a clear and recent precedent for base Republican House rebel against the will of their own leaders - the first vote on the Bill authorization TARP in September 2008. And no one, of each side democratic or Republican wants be intercepted vote Yes if measurement seems intended to defeat - which raises the possibility of exactly the same kind of stampede end for the outputs which resulted in the rejection of TARP.

Of course, it is worth remembering that began in the markets as soon as it became clear what was the wind blowing TARP - index Dow Jones crash, hard, and politicians have been forced to scramble. Of course, there are far fewer panic in the air at the present time, that he did so, but it is fairly safe to say that if the agreement collapses, much more "uncertainty" is injected into the economic landscape if it passes

Ultimately, it's a numbers game. How many Republicans defect? If party discipline is solid, only about 40-50 Democrats should vote for the Bill to ensure passage. But the Republicans who break with leaders, Democrats more must fall in line - posing headache rained for President Nancy Pelosi. At some point, it will be more reasonable to ask why she should mobilize support an agreement that his constituency believes is a capitulation to Republican - when priorities Republicans not even vote for it.

The number of Republicans who are reluctant will also send a signal to be the tenor of the next Congress. The next House will be much more conservative and less willing to compromise. If base break in revolt today opened next year will be bloody.
